Peer Reviews
Peer review assignments are a great way to get students engaged in an assignment that can deepen their knowledge and provide them with a more well-rounded learning experience. In this tutorial we will walk you through how to create peer review assignments in Canvas. We will also show you what it looks like from the student perspective and both the reviewer and the reviewee in order to help students navigate the peer review process.
Creating and Grading Peer Review Assignments
Creating the Assignment
- Navigate to Assignment and create a new assignment
- Click on the More Options button
- Scroll down and select the option that says Peer Review
- You have the ability to do group peer previews, meaning groups will be reviewing each other instead of individuals
- Select whether you want to assign peer reviews manually or randomly (we recommend selecting manually)
- After you save the assignment settings, add a rubric for the students to grade each other on
- On the right had side, underneath Speed Grader, click on Peer Reviews
- For each student, click on Give *name* a submission to assess and select the student they will be reviewing
- Click Submit to save your changes
Grading Assignments
- Navigate to Assignments and select your peer review assignment
- On the right, under speed grader, select the Peer Review button
- Click on the name of the student who peer reviewed the assignment
- Look at the comments and/or rubric
- You can also see comments left by peer reviewers while using speed grader
- The peer reviewed grades and comments do not impact a student's grade, the instructor must still grade student submissions
- Students don't automatically receive a grade for completing a peer review. If you want to give comments and/or grades for completing peer reviews, you can create a no submission assignment in the gradebook and assign points manually
