Template Course Request Form
What is a Template Course?
A Template Course is an empty course shell in Canvas you can use to build out a course. Even though all faculty have access to a Sandbox Course to use with the Growing with Canvas tutorial, you may want to have a separate Template Course available to build out a specific course. Since Template Courses don't have any students in them, you can create assignments, pages, modules, discussions, quizzes, etc. without having to worry about the course accidentally sending notifications to students while you work on building it.
Several instructors all teach the same course. Can I use a Template Course to build out a course that all instructors can copy from?
Yes!
A Template Course is a good place to build out a course that multiple faculty who teach the same course can share. One instructor can create the course (or multiple instructors can collaborate to create the course). Then, the finished Template course can be copied over to each individual course.
In some cases, you may want to use your Template Course as a "Blueprint" for other courses. In some cases, you may want to share your Template Course to the Canvas Commons so that other instructors can access the course and copy it. Please read the Blueprint Courses and Canvas Commons Comparison Document Links to an external site. to understand the distinction.
How long does it take for the template course to get created?
Your template course(s) will be available within two business days. You will receive an email confirmation from the Canvas team.
Once you build out a Template Course, you can easily copy it over into your course shell that has student enrollments. If you change your mind and find you don't need the Template Course, you can always delete it from your dashboard later.
