How to add a Turnitin assignment

In Canvas, Turnitin uses what they call a Plagiarism Framework in order to check for plagiarism and use other Turnitin tools. The following steps will help you set up a Turnitin assignment in Canvas.

Create an assignment as you typically would in Canvas. (Use this guide as an example: How to create an assignment in Canvas Links to an external site.)

As you're navigating the assignment options, focus on Submission Type.

Choose Online from the drop-down menu.

Choose the File Uploads option. Choose the file types you accept. (As a guide, these are the file types accepted by Turnitin Links to an external site..)  Note that a new Plagiarism Review option is now available for you.
Select file upload and see plagiarism review. Please note you should Restrict Upload File Types to: doc, docx, pdf

Where it says Plagiarism Review, use the drop-down to choose Turnitin.

This will give you several options to choose from for the Turnitin settings. Choose which settings you want based on this explanation: What do the different Turnitin settings mean? Links to an external site.

If you want to keep the same settings for future assignments, choose Save as default settings.

Edit who the assignment should be assigned to if needed (the default is Everyone) and add a due date.  You can specify an availability window if you would only like the assignment to be available during a specific window.

Consider adding the assignment to a Module Links to an external site. for easy student access.

Note the following:

  • Peer review is now done through Canvas instead of PeerMark. See how to create a peer review assignment in Canvas Links to an external site..
  • We recommend that somewhere in the Assignment instructions you prominently state that this is a Turnitin Assignment. In Blackboard, all Turnitin Assignments had a prominent Turnitin logo. In Canvas, there is no logo. Unless you state in the assignment instructions or title that this is a Turnitin assignment, the students will have no clear way of knowing this assignment will be reviewed for plagiarism by Turnitin.
