Turnitin Instructions for Students
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is a program that checks uploaded documents for plagiarism and/or the use of AI such as ChatGPT. Instructors can add Turnitin to Canvas assignments. They can also submit papers directly to Turnitin.com.
How can I tell if the assignment is a Turnitin assignment?
You will know it is a Turnitin assignment if you see a message that says, "I agree to the tool's End-User License Agreement" when submitting an assignment. See the picture below.
Tips and Best Practices
- Before you submit your assignment, click the Summary tab on the Assignment screen to check for essential submission parameters, such as the due date, if you can resubmit your work, or if your instructor accepts late submissions.
- After you upload your submission, be sure to print out a Digital Receipt for your own records.
For Mac Users
- Turnitin will not accept documents with the .pages extension; that is, documents generated from Apple's Pages word processing program. Please export your page file as a PDF from the Pages File menu.
- Turnitin and Safari do not work well together. Please use Chrome or Firefox when submitting a Turnitin Assignment.
How do I view Turnitin results
- When creating the assignment, the instructor defines when the Turnitin results become available.
- After the results are available, you will see a link in your Grades area that looks like a colored tag. It can be Blue, Green, Yellow, or Red.
- Click the colored tag and then accept the Turnitin User Agreement
- After accepting the agreement, your paper will open up in Turnitin
