Taking Canvas Quizzes: Tips for Success

Many instructors use the Quizzes tool in Canvas to give online quizzes and exams.  Here are some tips for success when taking Canvas Quizzes.

If your instructor is requiring Respondus LockDown Browser, please see this page for instructions.

Before the exam

During the exam

  • Do not use the browser back or forward buttons. Use the navigation buttons in the quiz itself.  Canvas Student Guide: How do I take a quiz? Links to an external site.
  • Do not refresh your browser.
  • Single click on answers (avoid double clicking).
  • Do not have the quiz open in more than one place, whether that's several tabs in the same browser, different browsers, or different computers/mobile devices. If you have a quiz open in more than one place, the auto-save might activate on a version of the quiz that doesn't have your most recent changes and that could overwrite your work.
  • Click the Submit Quiz button when you are done with the quiz. Do not rely on auto-submission, because the auto-submit feature will not work if you close the browser window that contained the quiz, quit your browser, sleep your computer, or have problems with your internet connection at the point when the time limit expires or the "Available Until" date passes.

If you lose your Internet connection

  • Until your computer reconnects, do not select back, forward, or refresh or close your browser and do not click the Submit Quiz button.
  • If possible, log back into the quiz immediately and continue.  If this is not possible, let your instructor know immediately.

If Canvas does not reconnect by the end of the exam, you can take the following steps:

  • Take screenshots of your quiz and email them to your instructor when your computer does reconnect.
  • If you have a smart phone, take a photo of your quiz and email it to your instructor.
