Merge Request Form

What is a crosslisted course? A crosslisted course is a course combined by the Registrar. It is two courses that are taught at the same time, by the same instructor, in the same room. For example, a 300 level class and a 500 level class.
What is a merged course? A merged course are two (or more) courses that are manually combined by a Canvas Admin. They are not taught at the same time or in the same room. Sometimes they are not taught by the same instructor. The courses could be combined to make the courses easier to manage or for purposes of collaboration.

**Note: Please do not submit a merge request to merge crosslisted courses with other crosslisted courses.  Crosslisted courses cannot be merged with other crosslisted courses **

If you are going to use Zoom in a merged course, please read this note about how the Zoom tab works in merged courses:

Merging courses merges all your students from multiple courses into one section. This means if you have multiple courses taught at multiple times, you only will have one Zoom tab.

  • All your students in all sections will have access to all the Zoom links.
  • All students will have access to all the Zoom cloud recordings.
  • This could be very confusing for your students.

If you are teaching using Zoom please carefully consider if it is more important to have your courses merged OR if it is more important to use the Zoom tab in Canvas.

If you want each course section to have their own Zoom tab in Canvas, please DO NOT MERGE YOUR COURSE(S).

If you need guidance, please visit our drop-in support. We are available M-Th from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Go to http://bit.ly/virtualtechhub Links to an external site. and a Zoom room will open.

Why Merge Courses?

  • If you teach multiple sections of the same course and want to manage them all together, this is for you.
  • If you like the idea of sending instructions, deploying tests, or posting content one time instead of the same thing multiple times, this is for you.

In Canvas, each “course” contains a “section” of student enrollments. We simply move sections of enrollments from one course umbrella to another, leaving behind an empty course and adding people to one of the existing courses. Please keep in mind that this means some of your sections will “vanish” from your Canvas Dashboard and Courses list! They are now part of the “base” section.

Why Does This Matter?

If you have already built content in one of the courses, ask us to move the other course sections into that one so you do not have to copy and reset content.

Merging should be done while courses are unpublished before the term begins or at the very beginning of the term. Coursework is retained with the course, not with the section enrollments, so if a published course is merged, all merged enrollments will lose any associated assignment submissions and grades.

Submit Your Request:

The following form is used to request that two or more sections of the same course, taught by the same instructor within the same semester, be merged into a single course shell. If you are co-teaching and need to merge courses taught by different instructors, please indicate it clearly in the form.

This form requires an accurate course ID for each section you wish to combine. For example, Spring2020T-PT-610-01.
